The Ethics Game
G-BioSport provides nutritional supplements to its customer base, much like GNC. They currently meet all existing FDA Standards with their products. Recently, it has come to light that some lab tests show trace contamination in 100% of the samples of GBS-Fibranafren that were tested. It is up to the Quality Control manager to identify and correct the problem(s). There are two situations in which the Quality control manager is presented with multiple situations and resolutions. Each situation and resolution involves ethical and moral dilemmas.
There are a few business ethics lenses that are available for the Quality Control manager to use: the Rights Lens, the Results Lens, the Fairness Lens, and the Reputation Lens. Each lens plays a different role in helping someone determine the best solution to a given situation. The Rights Lens determines right or wrong solely based on fulfilling duties of respect to people to insure that person’s rights are not violated. The Results Lens states that an action is ethical if the results of the action are good. The Fairness Lens is defines an act as ethical if it fulfills a duty to justice for the individual affected by the act. The Reputation Lens says a moral virtue is a character trait morally valued. There are also many core values or virtues that the company would like to uphold; two of which are integrity and moral courage. These two will play a large part in the outcome of both situations.
In the first situation, the Quality Control manger is tasked with determining if the consumers should be warned that contaminated product is on the shelves. The Quality Control manager should use the Rights/Responsibility Lenses to determine if the company, G-BioSport has a moral and ethical responsibility to ensure accurate labels are provided on the product, refund or replace the contaminated product and to warn the consumers of any potential dangers due to the contamination.
