Evolution Lab Report

Introduction and Purpose.

The Evolution Lab on the adaptation and evolution of finches allows the user to experiment with their population over 100, 200, and 300 years. The experiment locations takes place on Darwin Island and Wallace Island. By using diverse factors which influence adaptations and natural selection, the user can analysis the evolution process.

Hypothesis.

• Precipitation and beak size will have a vast effect on the population.

•The size of the environments island will affect the population.

•The bigger the clutch the higher the population over time.

Materials.

In this Evolution Lab, materials needed to complete the experiment was a computer and access to the Evolution Lab available on the student website.

Methods or Procedures.

The method the experimenter would use to limit the amount of options would be to first focus on the precipitation and beak size for Darwin Island by changing the variables and recording the side notes for the population in 100 years. Secondly, the experimenter would keep the highest population information from the previous analysis and determine what happens to the population when changing the clutch size. By taking the information from the highest population from these two tests, you can repeat the process for island size, starting population, heritability, and variance. The goal would be to see what parameters would need to be set in place to allow the population of the finches to sustain at their highest population numbers for 100, 200,and 300 years. Once the information for this experiment has been obtained, continue analyzing to see how quickly the finches’ population could become extinct out on both islands. Using the same testing method as above, but for the population to become nonexistent.
