According to Meredith & Mantel (2012), the categories of skills that should be considered in the selection of a project manager are:

* Credibility

* Sensitivity

* Leadership and management style

* Ability to handle stress

Question #2 (3): Discuss the PM’s responsibilities toward the project team members.

Fairness, respect, honesty

On the word of Meredith & Mantel (2012), the project manager’s responsibilities to members of the project team are dictated by the finite nature of the project itself and the specialized nature of the team. In another words, PMs should help project team with their career future, by assisting them with the process of going back to their functional homes or to new projects. PMs are responsible for ensuring that the project team completes the project and manages the team’s performance of project tasks. Moreover, PMs should demonstrate fairness, respect and honesty.

Question #3 (4): What are the major differences between functional managers and project managers?

In line with Meredith & Mantel (2012), functional managers are usually specialists, analytically oriented and they know the details of each operation for which they are responsible. The functional managers are administratively responsible for deciding how something will be done, who will do it, and what resources will be devoted to accomplish the task. Moreover, the functional manager is a direct, technical supervisor and may affect the choice of technology to be used by the project and the specific individuals who will do the work. Compared to a functional manager, project managers must be generalists that can oversee many functional areas and have the ability to put the pieces of a task together to form a coherent whole.
