Textiles

In the textiles room I found a variety of hazards. One was sewing machines as if someone isn’t using the machine correctly or carefully they could catch their finger in the machine so I decided that the teachers should monitor them and make sure they are using the equipment correctly. This is the best method to use instead of the teachers doing it for them because they would never learn how to use the machines properly and safely therefore a teacher demonstration is the best option. I would not recommend a teacher consistently supporting the service user because this would mean that the student will not learn the curriculum and be able to work alone.

Another thing I assessed was sewing pins on the floor. This could be a risk as someone could drop their work on the floor not knowing there was a pin on the floor, they could stab themselves or could even go through their shoe. To prevent this I have suggested that every lesson students should use the magnetic brushes and rub it across the area where they were working to collect the pins, yet again this is the best thing to do compare to picking them up because the pins could hurt and stab them which wouldn’t be very pleasant.

The last thing I looked at was the iron, this is another hazard as the iron is very hot and it could burn the service user or if someone wasn’t aware they could trip over the wire depending on where the socket is, therefore I have said that students should clear the area, keep the ironing board near the socket, and also create a sign so the rest of the class know that the iron is in use and other students won’t be more of a risk. This is the best option with a teacher’s demonstration on how to use the iron as if the teacher did the ironing for the pupils then the students won’t learn what they have to do, and how to use the iron properly.
