ETH 501 M5 CASE

In this assignment we are asked to look at safety in the workplace and to determine if we are in agreement or not with the recommendations to protect and educate immigrants on work place safety in the meat and poultry industry.

I agree with the recommendations that were put forth by the Human Rights Watch group with regards to workplace safety, in particular where it concerns immigrant workers. In 2004 OSHA pledged to help provide training and oversight to meatpacking cleaning companies. This arrangement was prompted by a World-Herald investigation on the contract cleaning industry's history of severe injuries and OSHA violations.

Every qualified candidate when applying for a job should be aware of any hazards that are attached to it. This is the responsibility of the employer to inform any applicant and knowing the various risks involved then the candidate can make an ethical decision to accept or decline the position offered. Most employees have the expectation that their workplace will offer a safe environment in which to do work. Some workplaces are safer than others just as some occupations offer more safety than others. Workplace safety ranks high on the list of goals for most workplaces. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) were created by Congress under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, which was signed by President Richard M. Nixon on December 29, 1970. (1) It required employers to provide workplaces free from serious recognized hazards and to comply with occupational safety and health standards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) want every worker to go home whole and healthy every day. Its mission is to help protect workers by setting and enforcing workplace safety and health standards and by providing safety and health information, training and assistance to workers and employers.
