CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Youth nowadays engage in different vices ─ usage of illegal drugs, gambling human trafficking and cigarette smoking. According to the 2012 Surgeon General’s Report, most young people who smoke regularly are already addicted to nicotine. In fact, they have the same kind of addiction as adult smokers.

Engagement in different vices by the young people usually results from different issues ─ may be parental, financial, or even attention seeking problems. The youth sector is expected to be the future stakeholders of our country. The young ones are expected to go to school, finish their chosen degree program, become professionals, perform their jobs properly, have their own families, and live peacefully.

In order to avoid the problems being brought by some of our young countrymen (specifically pertaining to vices), proper attention should be given to them. Every person is entitled to receive love and care from his parents ─ he is to be enrolled in a school (be it public or private) so he can show his hidden talents, skills as well as mental abilities. By giving the youth proper education, avoidance to illegal doing can really be possible.

This research will concentrate on the hazardous effects of cigarette smoking in the youth sector and how will this affect their future.

Statement of the problem

The main problem of the study is to identify the dangerous consequences of cigarette smoking to the young people who are engage in this kind of vice.

Specifically, the study will try to find answer to the following questions:

1. What are the possible solutions for the youth to avoid engaging in the vice, cigarette smoking?

2. How cigarette smoking affects the lives of young smokers including the secondhand smokers?

3. Based on statistics and percentage, how many of many of the youth inhabited in Poblacion 1, Cotabato City are associated with cigarette...
