A. Introduction:

As Harold Greneen, former CEO of ITT once said, “It is much more difficult to measure nonperformance than measure performance.” (Greneen, 2009) In the twenty first century, performance management has become the second most important stategic activity an organization can do. It is second only to training which is why this paper will show performance management from two sides of an organization. From the production manager’s role and from the Facility Training manager’s role.

At first glance one might think that they focus on performance management would be the same and have the same objectives in mind. Although this may be true, it is prevelant in todays business world that there is somewhat of a disconnect between the two functions. But to better understand the comparitive, it is important to understand just what is performance management.

B. Definition

Performance management is a systematic process of planning, monitoring, developing, rating and rewarding. (U.S.Government, 2013) Performance management when used properly involves employees, as individuals and members of a group, in improving organizational effectiveness in the accomplishment of the organization’s mission and goals.  Performance management uses performance measurement information to help set agreed-upon performance goals, allocate and prioritize resources, inform managers to either confirm or change current policy or program directions to meet those goals, and report on the success in meeting performance goals.

Training plays an important role within performance management to help facilitate employee development and organizational improvement.  It is important to understand individual and organizational goals.
