Strategies for Effective Learning: Personality and Learning Types

Different personality types lead to different learning styles. What works for you may not work for me. Depending on your background and age, some learning styles are more developed than others. Research has shown there are at least eight different types of intelligences. Assessments can help determine what type of personality you have and what type of learner you are, which will assist in your personal and professional life successes.

One type of learning style is Musical. If you have this type of intelligence, you can recognize patterns and tones easily, are good at remembering songs and melodies, and have a good understanding of musical structure, rhythm and notes. This type of learning style could be seen in the Thinker personality. Thinkers seek patterns and logical explanations for anything that interests them. They are creative, intelligent, inventive, and understand how things work. Strategies you could use for learning would be to express your ideas in a song or put together a rhyme to help remember what you’re studying.

Another type of intelligence is Interpersonal. If you have this type of learning style, you like doing projects with others, are good at understanding people and making them feel comfortable, and enjoy helping others. In my opinion, this learning style ties in with the Giver personality. Givers are caring and honest, make a difference in the lives of others, and are really good at whatever may catch their interest. Givers surround themselves with people and have a special talent for bringing out the best in other people. A strategy that can be used for learning would be to work in a team, comparing or relating your ideas with other people and collaborate together complete the task.
