Leonard Riggio opened a bookstore in 1965 to compete with the local college bookstore where he was employed, convinced that he could provide better service than the store in which he worked. Because of his success, he acquired the Barnes and Noble trade name in Manhattan in 1970. Today, Barnes and Noble is recognized as the Top Bookselling Brand and has achieved this status for the past seven years (Barnes & Noble, 2010). This success is achievable because of the vision, planning, and ethical standards demonstrated by the organization since being established. The purpose of this paper is to assess the role of ethics and compliance in the organization’s financial environment, describe the procedures to ensure ethical behavior and compliance with regulations, and evaluate the organization’s financial performance for the past two years.

The Role of Ethics and Compliance

The board of directors (“the Board”) at Barnes & Noble has adopted plans pertaining to rules regarding ethics for organizational growth. These rules include Barnes & Noble’s assurance to perform its transactions with high veracity and moral standards. Barnes & Noble indicates that principled consumerism is a valued progress in the direction of business development. Barnes & Noble’s position is that individuals should acknowledge his or her role and take personal responsibility concerning confrontation and optimistic change.

Barnes & Noble observes all relevant directives, systems, and policies when performing dealings and expect the employees not to know all the details regarding rules and regulations, but do expect employees to know the legal ramification that apply to his or her area of accountability.
