Diversity and Communication
Introduction
Diversity and Communication is prevalent in today’s workforce. “Workplace diversity has certainly been misinterpreted, by some people to be a code word for affirmative action or quotas in the workplace” (Howard, 1994, p. 2). In many circumstances in life diversity weighs more on the advantage side than the disadvantage. Does diversity have the same effect in our workforce today? Workplace diversity can enrich the communication in a business. These differences can influence everything from one-on-one interviews to interdepartmental meetings. Understanding the problems of diversity can help a company to better navigate its influence in communication in the workforce.
Diversity for many years was commonly referred to as the melting pot, but now it is known as multiculturalism (Parvis, 2003, p.37). Does diversity hinder the success of a business or increase the success of a business? According to Dr. Leo F. Parvis (2003), “diversity does offer remarkable benefits, although some people think diversity only creates problems and challenges” (p.37). Some complications that may arise from diversity in the workplace today are racism, sexism, homophobia, ageism, ethnic groups, personality, and education just to name a few. All these things could disrupt the workplace and create a hostile environment.
