How to Relive the Wild, Wild West

If "Buffalo Bill", "Wild Bill" Hickok and P.T. Barnum were alive today, they would certainly have a keen eye and a warm place in their hearts for Oklahoma City. For in the image of their life's work, Frontier City was originally opened in 1958 as a Western "town" theme-park. Frontier City is Oklahoma's only Western-themed amusement park, and has been a favorite tourist destination for over 50 years. My name is Derrick Farmer and I was born and raised in Oklahoma City, and Frontier City has provided electrifying entertainment for me and my family throughout the years. At Frontier City, the pioneering-spirit of an 1880's mining town has been captured in an authentic Western setting, featuring rides and live entertainment, that appeals to all ages. To illustrate how to enjoy a trip to Oklahoma’s premier amusement let’s take a closer look at the history, facilities and attractions.

Frontier City originally opened up at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds but moved to its current location a few years later, in the traditional fashion of a "boom town". How so? Jimmy Burge (Frontier City's founder), had a dream of turning a mock frontier town, built up as part of Oklahoma’s semi-centennial in 1957, into a permanent amusement park. Although construction would progress slowly for the first several months...in the final weeks before the Grand Opening, Frontier City shot up from nothing to sprawl a half mile along the interstate-35 highway. Just like an old west gold mining camp, blossoming into a city seemingly overnight. Rather than a traditional ribbon cutting, Frontier City scheduled to have its Governor aim an old fashioned six shooter at a piece of rope stretched across the stockade entrance. Additionally, Oklahoma City dignitaries were scheduled to arrive at "Opening Day" by stagecoach.
