Low-income families are, unfortunately becoming greater by the day with this recession that is going on. In this paper, Learning Team B will describe many of the factors that come with the life style they lead. First we will include a brief description of the support available for the families. After describing the types of support, we will share 2 experiences. We will finally explain many of the demographics, including race, age, culture and family structure.
Description
Low-income families are in need of additional help. They get additional help from informal and formal support groups. Many low-income families do not have the same amount of resources available to them. Low income families have very little positive experiences in their life to help them. Having different types of support are useful for low income families (Sousa & Rodrigues, 2009).
Functions of informal support
“Informal support involves family, friends, work associates, and neighbors. Informal support is characterized by close-knit geographical proximity. The woman is mainly the one who does the supporting in poor environments. This type of support is generally restricted to social support and short-term practical help, such as finding “someone to talk to” or leaving child(ren) with someone else for a couple of hours. Families tend to prefer the informal system, mainly because of higher reciprocity involved: asking for help means the recipient will give back assistance at another time.”(Sousa & Rodrigues, 2009) Also, informal support system is better because trying to get formal support is an inconvenience and you may not be able to receive the assistance.
