The topic that I chose for last week’s assignment, Detecting Media Bias, was an article entitled “Military Firings: Sex-Related Offenses Major Reason Behind Commander Dismissals”. There are a few strategies that can be employed in order to apply creativity in addressing the issues outlined in the article. First, the approach to “modifying a process or system” can be used. If the process for removing military personnel from rank as a result of infidelity is modified to first begin with the reasons BEHIND the infidelity (i.e. stress, changing times, etc), then perhaps the root of the problem could be solved instead of trying to control the symptoms. The second strategy that could be implemented is “improving things:”. If the current strategies in place for detecting and dealing with stress in the military arena is improved upon and revised, then perhaps people would find another outlet besides infidelity. Also, there may be an opportunity to explore whether infidelity in one’s private life should be connected with them keeping their public station.

The stages for promoting curiosity include searching for challenges, stating the problem, investigating the problem, and producing ideas. Going through these stages in order to promote curiosity can be effective with this particular problem because in order to get to how a solution may be obtained, we first need to know what the issues are. Is the problem only that infidelity is on the rise in the military? I doubt it. Perhaps infidelity is not on the rise, but since there are so many ways to get caught these days, it seems like it is. Perhaps the issue is not related to the military at all but just that people cheat. Period. Does that affect one’s ability to perform professionally? Perhaps the issue is the amount of stress that these men and women are under (although statistics show that the percentage of men being removed from rank compared to women is staggeringly higher).
