Servant Leadership

Leadership in a whole is a great trait to have, but to be able to acquire servant leadership there are a few more qualifications that an individual must have. Most people, when they hear the phrase “servant leadership” believe this to be a biblical term or some sort of spiritual capacity when this title can be applied to both spiritual and professional positions of leadership. It consists of qualities such as; listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and building community. Individuals that possess these traits are unselfish and wish to uplift, motivate, and encourage others. As stated in the Major Leadership Theories for servant, “Servant leadership focuses on increased service to others rather than to oneself.” (Servant Leadership Research Roundtable Proceedings, 2013)

In my opinion, the statement, “Although servant leadership is often associated with the Bible and Jesus Christ, it is totally compatible with most religions and theories of philosophy.” is agreeable as it does fit with most religions and theories of philosophy. Its core reasoning is to serve the needs of its followers and perhaps even the surrounding community. Servant leadership as a leadership model has crossed many boundaries and has been applied in health-care organizations, universities, and foundations. “Servant leaders have the responsibility to listen. Whether in small groups or with one other person, listening can often call forth the gifts of others. Listening provides support for people as they explore their own yet unnamed gifts. Listening provides encouragement for those who offer themselves in service. Listening provides the means whereby one begins to serve.” (Young, D.S.,1999)

In comparison, transformational leadership holds some of the same characteristics as that...
