Mass media is broken up into eight categories, internet, Television, newspapers, radio, magazines, movies, recordings, and of course books. In the late 20th century mass media was born, mainly from technology. See there’s a trend here! As technology gets more advanced, mass media will grow. In the 1930’s the birth of the penny paper was born. It favored more drama, for example murder, and adventure over the dry political stories the regular newspaper was dishing out. “While newspapers catered to a wealthier, more educated audience, the penny press attempted to reach a wide swath of readers through cheap prices and entertaining (often scandalous) stories. The penny press can be seen as the forerunner to today’s gossip-hungry tabloids.” (Lule, 2012, P.30) Television was a huge development. In 1946 television had only 17,000 units in the United States. Within a period of 7 years, two-thirds of American households had at least one television in their home. “The media world faced drastic changes once again in the 1980s and 1990s with the spread of cable television. During the early decades of television, viewers had a limited number of channels to choose from—one reason for the charges of homogeneity. In 1975, the three major networks accounted for 93 percent of all television viewing. By 2004, however, this share had dropped to 28.4 percent of total viewing, thanks to the spread of cable television.” (Lule,2012, P.33) Cable television continues to grow bigger and bigger every year. You ever just sit down to watch a movie, maybe its Transformers. You watch Transformers, and think “Wow I really liked that movie” You then love the character bumble Bee (Yellow Chevy Corvette). You know how many Yellow Chevy Corvettes I have seen on the streets since the second Transformers movie came out? Maybe two each day I’m out driving.
