Unit 13 Lecture Study Guide – Nervous System Part II

1. What are the 2 major divisions of the Nervous System?

Central and Peripheral

2. What are the 2 major divisions of the central nervous system (CNS)?

Brain and spinal cord

3. What are the 2 major divisions of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?

Skeleton (somatic) and autonomic system

4. Differentiate between the autonomic and somatic nervous systems.

Autonomic controls involuntary functions can be influenced by thought and emotions. Somatic is a voluntary and reflex movements.

5. List the 3 types of neurons found in the PNS and their function.

Sensory- sensory receptors to CNS

Motor- CNS to muscle and organs

Interneurons- Connections within CNS

6. Differentiate between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Be sure to include at least 3 examples of responses controlled by each.

The sympathetic is involved in the stimulation of activities that prepare the body for action.

-dilates pupil

-stimulates salivation

-relaxes bronchi

The parasympathetic activates tranquil functions.

-contracts pupil

-constricts bronchi

-stimulates gallbladder

7. What is lateralization and how are body functions affected by it?

Lateralization means that certain functions are located (in a part or total) on one side of the brain. The right hemisphere includes judging the positions of objects in space, understanding of body position, comprehending and remembering things you see or do. It is also the motor control of the left side of the body. The left side of the brain includes understanding and use of language, memory for spoken and written language and motor control of the right side of the body.

8. Describe the principle of contralateral organization.

Sensory information sent to opposite hemisphere.

9. List the 4...
