The company that has been chosen for this case study is Professional Products. The company manufactures and distributes braces and wraps with Velcro fasteners. It was founded by Robert Kilbey in the early 1960s. He started this company selling medical supplies out of his Airstream trailer and it is now an international company under the direction of his son, Bryan Kilbey. (Bohlander, 2010)

Professional Products is growing independently and has not participated in mergers, acquisitions, or joint ventures. Professional Products has had a concentrated growth strategy. They have chosen not to diversify its product offerings but to specialize in braces and wraps by making most of their own components including elastic. This decision makes sense because the requests they receive are very specific. They have developed their capabilities in-house. As a growing company, Professional Products has not focused on product expansion but instead on geographic location. This is proven by opening a new sales office in for the European market. Professional Products can expect to see an increase of volume.

Organization must make informed decisions about the right level of talent that it needs. Attracting, selecting, developing, and retaining world-class talent represents a very significant investment for most organizations (Becker, 2011). Downsizing is a very difficult choice that a company makes and affects a great deal of people in the process. The decision should be carefully analyzed before the actual decision is made in order to make the process easier on all parties involved.

Professional Products has never terminated an employee. Since the jobs are highly-skilled, Professional Products likely fears that as they continue to expand that there would not be enough labor and skills available to produce good quality products.
