For many years, people believe that violent media is harmful. People afraid that exposure of violent media to kids may cause the kids to be violent and create a violent society. However, Gerard Jones, the author of “Violent Media is Good for Kids” had a different point of view. In his essay, Jones claimed that violent media may not be as bad as people believe; right way of using violent media is helpful and good for kids because it can help pull kids out of emotional trap and help kids conquer the felling of powerlessness. As he concluded, if parents shelter their kids too much, kids will not have normal childhood and growing experience. Despite of Jones fine writing and his eye-catching view point, essay “Violent Media is Good for Kids” is ineffective because the author uses poor empirical evidence, logical fallacies and inappropriate emotional appeals.

Jones uses of poor empirical evidence make his argument ineffective. Jones gave many personal experiences to support his argument. First of all Jones give his childhood experience that tell the audience how wrong it would be to shelter children away from the media. He stated that “Place in a small, experimental school that was wrong for me, afraid to join my peers in their bumptious rush into adolescent boyhood, I withdrew into passivity and loneliness……built a wall between me and the crudest elements of American pop culture” (Para 1), Jones believe he grow up to passive is because he was shelter away from the reality and media. The reasoning is deductive, one persona from does not necessary cause by just shelter kids away from violent media. Jones also provides example about his mother give him comic book which started is road on following superheroes and “finally my on lead along a twisting path to a career and identity” (Para 5).
