Dear Mr. Holder, I am writing this letter to you on behalf of the citizens of the United States and throughout the world who are against testing on animals. This treatment of animals is cruel, inhumane and the animals suffer a great deal. What you and your company put these animals through affects them mentally, physically and emotionally and I will present new alternatives so that this cruelty can be stopped.

Attention getter(I’m not sure on the structure of my intro yet, so I was unsure of where to place this) : “Millions of animals are used legally every year in medical experiments to investigate major human disease [and] they are also used to test potential drug treatments” (Callanan 19).

Common ground: I will give light to the fact that the Research Defence Society has been started to defend the use of research on animals and pride themselves on “reduction, replacement and refinement” (Callanan 19). It explains that they always reduce the amount of animals needed for the study, find alternatives to using animals altogether when necessary and that they are well taken care of.

I. First, I will show that testing and research is a very traumatic experience, whether physically, mentally or emotionally for these animals.

A. “The animals are not given any pain relief and are subjected to horrific levels of pain from heat or cold, and from having limbs crushed and spinal cords damaged” (Callanan 19).

1. I will use this quote as a rebuttal towards the common ground statement I made above. The Research Defense Society claims that all animals are well maintained and always taken care of. However, the majority of these tests and treatments are handled out of the public’s eye, and are therefore don’t feel the need to treat the animals with respect (Callanan 20).
