Legalizing Marijuana

Lets say you flip a coin, “heads” means you have tried marijuana and “tails” means you have not, that’s a 50% chance you have. Studies that I found in my research show roughly half of American people have tried marijuana once in their life. Marijuana is not like any other legal or illegal substance that one can get, meaning marijuana is not chemically altered. I decided to research marijuana and how it could impact America if it was legal. I would argue for legalizing marijuana because it could help medically, increase revenue by taxation, and decrease the cost of the criminalization that surrounds marijuana.

Marijuana is a plant that grows from the ground and can be smoked like tobacco, or eaten. It has many different street names like weed, pot, bud, and herb. Since marijuana is a plant, it is hard to determine when it first came about, but it has been dated back into the B.C. times. Weed is very well known since it is a drug and an illegal substance. The reason marijuana is illegal is because it has side effects, just like any other drug you can get. Marijuana contains THC that gives the “”high” feeling. Although marijuana plants can reach more than 6ft tall, the plant produces small buds that can weigh a couple of grams. When the plant is mature, the buds are clipped off the plant because the bud contains the THC. There are many different delivery methods that can be used to get the THC into your body. Weed can be smoked like a cigarette, but without the filter and it’s called a joint. It can be smoked through an object like an apple, a soda can, or a bong. Although smoking weed is the quickest way to get high, taking about five minutes, there are other ways to get high that don’t involve smoking. Weed can be made into foods like brownies, cookies, and breakfast cereal. When consumed, it takes roughly 60 minutes to get the high effect from the THC in the food.
