Scenario: A small hometown restaurant opens for business today. The line is out of the door due to the anticipation of a new restaurant in such a small town. The first night was a big success. Over 150 people dined that night. 24 hours later, the local hospital reported 48 people came in with server stomach pains, vomiting, and lose stool. The hospital contacted the local health department to come in and do an investigation. Initially they found that all of them were at the restaurant yesterday.
1. Define the problem: Stomach Issues: Why might this be? It could be lots of reasons. Maybe the food was bad. Maybe one person was sick and passed it down to one person to the other at the diner. Maybe the utensil to prepare the food was not cleaned well. Or maybe the food was not cooked properly.
2. Gather information about the question: Where was the food purchased? What food was served, who was cooking the food, and the diner had to be the first place of the virus. Hmm…there are many reasons why the people are sick. Was the chef sick? What time did the 48 people go eat? Was the food left out for a long period of time? Let me start with the one person that was sick in the crowd.
3. Hypothesis: I hypothesize that the grand opening of the restaurant was the origin of the sickness. Only 48 people got sick out of 150 people. Meaning that either the time virus was passed down or the time that everyone went the chef was working on his shift.
4. Testing the hypothesis: I would first issue a regular check up with the chef to go get himself check out. Interview the 48 people and see what they ate. This might determine what food was the most common that was eaten. I would then recall the most common food that was eaten by the 48 people. I would then wait for results from the doctors and have the owner order new the new food. I cannot...
