Study Skills Essay

My chosen essay topic is nutritional needs as I find this extremely interesting and it is a subject that I find stimulates debate within the Health Service. Many experts are convinced that nutritional standards in hospitals are very poor and this leads to patient welfare being compromised. (I personally tend to agree with this point of view and so passionate about this that I border on being angry about this shortfall in patient care). Harris, G., Bond, P. Nursing Times; 98:31, 32-33. “Nutrition is a fundamental aspect of nursing care (cited in Cortis, 1997), but an estimated 15 – 40% of people admitted to hospital in the UK are affected by malnutrition (cited in Malnutrition Advisory Group, 2000). I believe that trust hospitals should not only be giving more attention to nutrition on a broad scale but also on a personal level, what works for one patient may not be appropriate for another. There must be a great deal of value in taking a more holistic approach to nutrition. I am convinced that we should be treating the core of patient’s conditions with nutrition as one of the key starting points, after all, we are what we eat. In this essay I have paid great attention to the study skills I have learnt and how I can better them in both my future studies and performance. Firstly I will look at time management; then my lifestyle; followed by the environment in which I study; what suits me best; and lastly motivation and goals.

Time management is an area in which I struggled and realised that I had utilize my time more efficiently. As a mature student I found that my time was filled with lots of duties and responsibilities. It was difficult to find enough hours in the day before I started my Adult Nursing Course at University but now I have to do all the same jobs in addition to going to University and studying at home.
