Case analysis of teaching a student with dyslexia

Case Summary

The video introduces a story about a boy with dyslexia, who has difficulty in reading and writing .Due to this inherent defect, the boy ,Ishann,was not able to follow the teacher in class and had bad academic performance. Actually the boy was very bright and had talent in the area of painting. However, his parents, who were unaware of their son’s condition and hence ascribed the academic failure to his laziness, were quite disappointed at him and nearly gave him up . Fortunately, a responsible and warm-hearted teacher recognized the problem behind the boy’s abnormal behavior during the process of observing him and paying a visit to the boy’s home. Afterwards, he succeeded in persuading the principle to give the boy another chance and teach the boy in a different manner. The boy was allowed to be tested orally, instead of using method of reading and writing in which the boy had birth defects. At the meantime, the teacher started to assist the boy with his reading and writing using various teaching methods specially designed for dyslexic students , and gradually the boy began to show signs of improvement and his confidence also restored.

Introduction to Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a specific type of learning disability. It is a genetic disorder which causes trouble in processing words or numbers. Usually Dyslexia individuals have difficulties in grasping language skills, such as reading, writing and spelling even though they possess average or above-average IQ.

Student’s problems and learning needs

Obviously, as a dyslexic, the boy has special learning needs. If one wants to read and write, it’s essential to relate the sound and the symbols. Ishann, however, was not able to fulfill this basic requirement.
