In the Back-to-school speech the teacher is giving to the parents of her students, the teacher show sensitivity to the parents in in several different ways. First, she is aware of the language barrier between them and has translators available to translate the information she is giving the parents. Second, she states “I believe in keeping the lines of communication open between us.” A third instance in her speech where she demonstrates her sensitivity to the parents, is by making herself available one night a week for any questions and / or concerns they may have.

The teacher scheduled a translator to be there, thus showing the parents she is aware of some language issues they may face and is willing to go the extra mile to keep the communication between them. Communication is an intrinsic part of any relationship, including parents of young children and the staff of programs that serve them (Mendoza, 2003). Scheduling a late night for parents who have questions and concerns is letting the parents know she is open and willing to not only be there for their children, but also she is willing to be there for the parents.

Throughout her speech she demonstrates some insensitivity towards the parents. One instance was when she stated that “I have written a disclosure documents and made a copy for all of you.” Some of the parents may not understand what a disclosure statement is and feel frustrated by the teacher choice of vocabulary. Another instance of her insensitivity in her speech is when she says, “A Web site is a place you can visit using your home computer to get more information about our school and my class.” In this quote she has made an assumption that everyone has a home computer. She is also assuming that the parent have internet access. In her assuming this, she is separating herself from the families who do not own a computer or have internet access.
