Introduction
Golden Dragon Group (GDG) is a family owned hotel group founded by James Lim, and he owns nine boutique hotels in Southeast Asia. Currently, James Lim is looking onto retirement and is handing control over to the next generation which is to his only and eldest son, Wilson Lim.
The company had established itself in the boutique hotel market and understandably been profitable under James leadership. The open system theory (Ludwig von Bertanlanffy, 1956) acknowledges that the environment organisations operate in, has significant effects on the organisational behaviour, structure and culture.
Various tools and models may be used to evaluate the micro and macro environment of GDG. For this report, SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) analysis were used in establishing the internal and external environment of GDG.
Through using the SWOT analysis, barriers to implementing change are surfaced. One of the key barriers that were identified is resistance to change (outsourcing operations) by key stake holders.
As with any family business, maintaining a workable relationship is critical. Change implementation needs to be carefully planned and executed to maximise the results and minimise damage to the working relationships and trust within the Lim family.
Hence, the Pietersen Framework appears to be most suited for GDG in beginning for its transformational process.
While Wilson and his son Mathew had identified outsourcing as the key method for the organisational growth, this report will look at the possible limitations by using SWOT analysis.
Additional recommendations for GDG growth were explored by using the Concept Fan approach. The linear process of going forward and backwards in concept fan will widen the search for development and growth options as well as identifying the core problems.
