With over 6.5 billion people in the world, one can imagine how difficult it would be to study and examine all the different cultures that exist. (World Diversity Patterns) Although it's impossible to know everything about every culture, it's also very important to take time to learn something about the way others live. Renowned American writer and social activist, Robert Alan said it best when he said “Cultural differences should not separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity.” Also: “Intercultural dialogue is the best guarantee of a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.” Let us take a closer look at some different countries and how their cultural beliefs, values, norms, and practices influence communication.

Europe is considered to be one of the smallest continents yet it has the second largest population. It is made up of over forty different countries including Greece, one of the worlds most popular destinations. Within every culture are a set of cultural beliefs. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, cultural beliefs are essentially the customs, arts, and way of life for a particular group or place.

For Greeks their beliefs stem from their traditional religious views. Most Greeks follow the teachings of the Greek Orthodox Church. (Kos2013) They also believe in the importance of collectivism and the power of a group of people who are on the same accord. One of the more significant beliefs that affect their pattern of communication is eye contact. In Greek culture, lack of eye contact can be frowned upon and thought of as showing little to no respect to the others in the conversation. If someone is trying to avoid eye contact they are believed to possibly be withholding something or are looked at as untrustworthy. (Greek Business)
