It has become increasingly important for health care organizations to use performance measures to determine how well the organization is doing. New legislation will make it costly for those institutions that fall short of the mark. There are many opportunities for a health care organization to measure performance. This paper will discuss how Religious health care, a 575 bed community hospital, should use the advise of a consulting firm to improve some of its’ core processes. The consulting firm will point out opportunities for improvement and offer suggestions on steps can be taken to insure success.

As an employee of the consulting firm I have been assigned the task of reviewing the responses of the several leaders of the hospital, in which they provide their perspective on how the organization is performing. It is from these responses that I will identify areas that need a closer look. I will start by describing the five important elements of the governing boards agenda for areas of improvement. I will also look at how the organization can use the balanced scorecard to improve overall performance. I will cover some performance measures that can be used to evaluate the performance of the emergency room nursing staff. I will identify ways in which the hospital can better manage specific patients groups, and what strategies they can use to enhance public image. Finally, I will look at a couple of ways technology can be used to conduct internal management audits.

It is the responsibility of Religious Health Care’s governing board to act on opportunities for improvement. “An effective board must be thorough in its environmental assessment, imaginative in its search for solutions and deliberate in its eventual actions” (White and Griffith 2010 p.119).
