VALUE EDUCATION IN EXPRESS PRIMARY SCHOOL TO REDUCE EXAM MALPRACTICES

INTRODUCTION

There has been an increasing rate of examination malpractices in the recent years. This menace has permeated every level of educational system in Nigeria, ranging from primary to tertiary institutions and amazingly religious educational institutions are not exempted. According to Azuka and Oyaziwo (2006) as cited by Oluyeba and Daramola (1992), “examination malpractice is any form of irregular behaviour exhibited by a candidate or anybody charged with the conduct of examination before, during or after the examination which contravenes the rules and regulations governing the conduct of such examination”. This act is opposed to the primary purpose of education, “which is the training of the mind and character for the acquisition of practical and theoretical skills, knowledge and functional ideas for development...” ( Azuka & Oyaziwo,2006).

In view of the challenges of exanimation malpractices in Nigeria, this project seeks to reduce examination malpractice from the primary school level through value education. This is because at the heart of this menace is the erosion of values in the society. The ethical principles inherent in the decalogue are the biblical basis for this work (Exodus 20:1-10). The authors’ philosophy for the work is based on the applications of behavioural and relationship leadership theories.

WHAT TO DO

The cohort will adopt two strategies for value education in the primary school: training and motivation. The value education will be done through training of teachers, parents and the pupils. The cohort will also provide motivation for ethical behaviour among the pupils using incentive based approach such as provision of scholarships and awards for outstanding performance
