Invisible Hand.

Trend all schools and classrooms have. Instead of old days prof would face you and the students would all sit facing the same way and have a chalkboard. Now we have dry erase board or powerpoints and students are all seated.

Other trends—you are graded on how well you get along with others (instead of how well you are with math, reading, etc.) but now there is entire page devoted to social skills.

Kindergarten was half a day and all had to do was nap and know address and phone number. Now they have to bring scantrons, etc.

Most of these have to do with social skills.

Other example—newspapers used to have the news. Now we read them online, in real life newspaper sales are declining. And now everyone reads the other people opinions—we are directed to opinion of others instead of clear cut standards of everything.

Invisible hand pushing towards other directives.

Student talked about music industry and people getting famous on YouTube. And American Idol is the masses deciding if you are talented, instead of a scout.

There was no such word on postmodernism when author wrote the book, he is foreshadowing post-modernism. Post-modernism is an outgrowth of other directive.

Corporal punishment is replaced by the time out.

Time out works because of anxiety and shame it causes the little kid.

Corporal punishment was instituted in middle ages because there was no time for playing and goofing off so they invented beating them.
