INTRODUCTION

India is booming country in world and despite having recession. India is one of the countries in world that have revived quickly as compared to other countries. India transport sector is large and diverse. As it has 3.32 million kms of road network which is largest in the world next to China and US. The country is totally dependent on road network that moves freight which is most cost efficient. India has always been on road to development, building new infrastructure, creating new roads and developing economy as whole. Almost all sectors whether it be power, aviation India lead to success in every department. But the major factor is the transportation sector where India is fully dependent on.

As, India transportation system contributes 5.5% of nation’s GDP and caters to need of billion people within country. Roads and Railways are the cheapest form of transportation which is directly connected to ports and airports within country.

The automobile industry in India is rapidly growing with annual production of over 4.6 million vehicles, and vehicle volume is expected to rise greatly in future. As, road transport sector enjoys an advantage over other modes of transport in handling short-lead (distance) traffic.

The Indian government tends to earn mark a huge amount of US$ 1 trillion for infrastructure development for next 5 years. Roads occupy an eminent position in transportation as it carries 65% freight and 85% passenger traffic and Rail transport carries 17 million passengers each day and carries more than 2 million tons of freight a day.

A good road network is critical infrastructure requirements for rapid growth. It provides connectivity to remote areas, provides accessibility to markets, schools and hospitals.
