Plan-Do-Study-Act (PSDA): The Deming Cycle

Introduction

Educators must constantly use data for decision making and continuous student improvement. Data is the barometer and gauge that should guide all school decisions. Data should be shared and discussed across the curriculum and among all stakeholders. Assessments are used by many schools to provide information to teachers, school administrators, and district administrators about the performance of students on each of the broad academic standards. It is very important that students understand their individual data because ultimately this serves as a guide or pathway to success. Reading remains a primary skill set of importance because all standardized tests eventually breakdown into snippets of reading assessment. Guskey (2003) stated that large scale assessments, like all assessments, are designed for a specific purpose. In his classic book the Art and Science of Teaching Marzano asserted that assessments should include quizzes, class discussions, and use rubrics for large and small projects. In the following paper data analysis from EOCEP and HSAP tests will be examined at a high school from the standpoint of its usage across grade levels. In conclusion, the data will be analyzed to show how data is used across grade levels and for continuous school improvement.

Across Assessment

Looking at the 2013 EOCEP and five year HSAP results the LRHS the staff analyzed the data to implement changes that would lead to student gains on these assessments. The EOCEP was developed to comply with the Education Accountability Act requirement to develop end-of-course examinations in gateway or benchmark courses.
