An understanding of the effective and responsible use and management of information systems is critical for managers and other business knowledge workers in today’s international information world. Information systems and technologies have developed into a necessary element of flourishing businesses in the human resource, marketing, and accounting departments. These departments are considered major functional areas in business operations. Information systems (IS) perform three key roles in the operations of these departments. The IS supports its’ business operations, managerial decision making, and strategic competitive advantage .

Human Resources information technology is critical for companies to manage their employee data and benefits plans. It is no longer a luxury but a necessity to help HR manage both masses of information and the dollars spent on operations. The Human Resource Information System (HRIS) is a software or online tool for the data entry, data tracking, and data information needs of the Human Resources department. Typically packaged as a data base, hundreds of companies sell a version of HRIS and each has varied capabilities. An effective HRIS provides information on just about anything the company needs to track and analyze about employees, former employees, and applicants. The system allows Human Resources employees to do their own benefits updates and address changes, thus freeing staff for more tactical tasks. Additionally, data necessary for employee management, knowledge development, career growth and development, and equal treatment is facilitated. Managers can access the information they need to legally, ethically, and effectively support the success of their reporting employees.
