Conventional Communication in a Virtual World
It is interesting to observe the continuing creation of major accomplishments and improvements in the field of business communications, yet the actual art of communication continues to struggle within the workplace. A lack of information for conducting appropriate accomplishments continues to affect many organizations. This is, indeed, unfortunate with all of the technological advances along with the education and knowledge emanating from the employees, and the perception of proper programs put in place. This paper will examine some of the issues regarding the failure of communication within organizations due to improper listening skills and misinterpretation of the message. It will also review some of the benefits that newer technology affords us in terms of nonverbal communication and, in some cases, how it can be detrimental if used improperly. Finally, this paper will evaluate some successful communication methods for improving the exchange of information in a business setting like proper listening and improved verbal communication techniques.
Communication is, undoubtedly, the key to a strong business relationship. Hybels and Weaver (2007) explain, "communication is any process in which people share information, ideas, and feelings" (p. 8). Whether it is external, as in customer relations, or internal, among the various employees within an organization, it is the lifeline for the successful existence of any company. It does not require too much thought to realize that proper communication is essential for spreading information throughout an organization. This way, everyone concerned can be informed to the degree that he or she requires in order to achieve his or her goals.
