Freida Mae Jones Assignment

In this case Freida Mae Jones feels as though she is being discriminated against on the basis of her race. She says her boss, Stan Luboda, is “babying” her. According to Frieda, he never gives her the chance to work on a project alone like he does with another one of her co-workers who started the same time as she did. She also feels as though he is overcautious with her, explaining this a lot more slowly to her than other, which makes her feel inferior.

Freida comes from a family that has experienced racial discrimination in the past. Her family moved from Georgia in 1969 to go to New York for better opportunities, and growing up, her parents and her encouraged her and her siblings to be their best. Coming from that type of upbringing can cause you to grow up skeptical of white people because ever since you were little you’ve only been hearing about bad things white people do in the South and that you need to do your best so that you are able to receive the same opportunities as white people. Her skepticism of white people was increased when her advisor told her to seek training in a “practical” field such as sewing although she was the top student in her class. I’m not saying Luboda wasn’t discriminating, but maybe Freida could’ve been over reacting in her accusation because of the skepticism she has for white people.

I feel like this situation could get worse for Freida because she overreacted in the eyes of Luboda. This could make him stay true to his belief that Freida would not be a good person to go work in the field with the customers, which is the reason he didn’t think she could handle it appropriately.

To fix this situation, think Luboda can continue to apologize for the misunderstanding just as he has been doing. To appease her I believe he should agree to treat her how she want to be treated. He can stop being overcautious with her and he can start letting her work with customers. In this situation both people...
