Could money, goods, titles or anything material make someone really happy? Could they bring the same or better bliss than love, friendship, unity and dreams bring? The answers to these questions according to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby are radically negative. The author shows and extremely difficult world in which nobody finds the true meaning of life and the true meaning of happiness. In this book characters that could otherwise be happy are miserable as seen by Tom and Daisy’s lifestyle, Nick and Jordan’s lifestyle, and Gatsby’s search for love.

Tom and Daisy Buchanan are the typical couple the get married too soon and up having problems in their relationship. Daisy says, “…that’s what I get for marrying a brute of a man, a great big hulking physical specimen of a—“ because Tom had hurt her knuckle, and Tom says, “I hate that word hulking, even in kidding.” Daisy knew that he didn’t like it but she still said it, which means that she wanted to hurt him since she stilled said, “Hulking.”(Quotes from page 16) They criticize and hurt each other. Even though they have so many things and a very nice house, they live very far apart from each other. The fact that Tom had found a mistress also gives the idea that he is not only unhappy with Daisy, but also that he is not completely satisfied with her. Catherine said during the party at Myrtle’s house, “Neither of them can stand the person they’re married to.”(Page 37) She was talking about Tom and Myrtle. She knew that they were not happy together and that they should look for love somewhere else. No matter how famous, rich and popular Tom is, it is not enough to make her wife happy. Tom wasn’t with her when their baby was born. Daisy was so sad and miserable that she says, “…’I’ m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”(Page 21) She is sad because she realizes everything that happens around her and that hurts her.
