During this 3 week series I have done more reading than I have done in quite a while, but the benefit of this reading will be lasting due to the nature of the subjects within the readings specifically the “The Transparent Leader” text. I have found through all the stories that a common underlying tone of spiritual development for these men. They rose or fell from power but all achieving a greater maturity in spirit. Some had created brilliant metaphors for how that journey related to their business like “James H. Amos, Jr. and his pitons,…Chuck Buck and the forging of a knife blade,…or Sam Addoms and his navigation metaphors”. (Johnson, 2001) All had spiritual growth and this is the hope I will bring over to my life. I have not always been what I am today. Most adults while I was in my youth would say I was a punk or smart mouth kid that knew it all. From the ages of sixteen to about twenty-four there wasn’t much that I was going listening to, including my mother and father. As I have grown and now have a family of my own, I know what my mother and father were talking about, now at forty. My business life had a similar story. Like most I was told never bring up religion, politics, or wives in a business setting the big three it was named. Never let personal problems become company problems. Throughout my twenty years in business I have had but three defining moments moving me closer to integrating my faith with business.

The first defining moment was when I left Longview and the comfort of my family’s company Trendsetter Construction to marry my wife and move to the DFW area. I was a project supervisor and a board member of successful dirtwork company from a semi religious family.
