Renaissance: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina or Giovanni Gabrieli
The Renaissance period of art music was a period whereby, fine arts and music flourished; this period entailed some ground breaking advancements in music composition and notation. The Renaissance period is classified between 1400 and 1600. Between this 200 years, there were many great composers whose mold-breaking musical ideas shaped the world of music today; however, in this discussion, the key emphasis is on Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1526-1594), and Giovanni Gabrieli (1553-1612). Of the two, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is the most outstanding and best representative of the Renaissance period. Palestrina’s polyphonic music is pure, the voicing is well balanced, smooth, beautifully harmonized and transparent in sound.
On the other hand, Giovanni Gabrielli’s music lasted way past the Renaissance period, therefore, it was a little bit different from the compositions of the other composers of the renaissance period. Gabrielli meticulously employed the antiphone in his compositions, whereby, a group of instruments or choir could be heard on one side, then a response would come from another group of instruments or musicians on another side. Gabrielli preferred composing sacred works. This music greatly influenced the development of the Baroque period, therefore, it is sensible to say that Palestrina’s music represents the Renaissance period better than Gabrielli’s music.
