Q1. What’s the issue at hand?

Cromwell alumni children have a better chance of being admitted than other applicants.

According to Hope’s friend who work-studies at the admissions office; Average applicant to Cromwell has one in ten chance of being admitted, but alumni children have a four in ten chance.

Q2. Is it significant?

Ethical everyone should get an equal opportunity, but I agree with Hope when she says legacies do deserve extra attention. I agree with her because of two reasons. First, as she mentioned alumni students are major donors. Second, as a business point of view, alumni students are basically repeat customer. Almost most business provides more attention to their existing clients or customers.

Q3. A) List claims being made?

1) Children of alumni having a easier time getting into Cromwell than other applicants.

2) Legacy applicants are more likely to do well when they get to Cromwell.

3) Legacy applicants probably have higher retention rates, because legacies won’t ever want to transfer to another school.

4) If parents graduated from Cromwell, that means they must have been smart which means children are smart too.

5) Legacies aren’t the only ones who get favorable treatment in admission process. Special consideration is provided to other groups as well. Example, athletes, student with special artistic or musical talents, e.t.c.

6) Alumni children become major donors.

7) Cromwell depends on alumni support to raise funds. If they cut down their number of legacy admission what would happen to the college budget? Cromwell is just doing what all the other private colleges are doing.

B) Is there a factual basis to the claims?

Most claims are an assumptions made by Hope that could be fact.

C) What kind of evidence is being provided in support of claims?
