In Patsy Aldana and Ricj Wilks’ article “Literacy is not enough if content is mental junk food”, they address their alarming concerns about Canadians and their viewpoint on the important of written literature. Aldana and Wilks state that the government is misleading the general public with false claims. While the government says that literacy scores are going up, there is a plummet in reading enjoyment coming from students in elementary school. Aldana states that reading allows readers to stimulate the creative side of the brain as literature helps bring fantasy settings to life. In order to help save a dying culture, Aldana and Wilks have left it up to teachers of the educational system to help make reading a more enjoyable task like it used to be.

The author’s argument is one that challenges the government’s priorities in terms of the educational system, and its future students. Literature and reading are not worth the same as what it used to be. They argue that reading has become more of a hassle rather than a hobby by many. It seems that to the authors point of view, a lot of the problems stem to the government and educational institutions. As generations go on, the literature culture is being lost due to the many technological advancements. Aldana and Wilks don’t think the problem has to do with children, but with the adults who have the power to help change future generations bleak opinion on reading. Reaching out to teachers and setting the government straight, is a major step in pushing literature back into society’s culture.

Writing an analysis piece compared to a summary is very different. When I was writing the summary, I didn’t have to use much thinking power, it was almost like auto pilot. Paraphrasing an author’s words require much less effort compared to analysis.
