Personal Responsibility Essay

Personal responsibility to me is being accountable for your actions, owning up to your mistakes and making an effort to correct those mistakes. The relationship between personal responsibility and college success is actually finding a way to introduce college into your lifestyle by being organized, capitalizing on past life experience and having self-discipline.

Being organized is one of the keys to being successful at the majority of the things we set out to accomplish in life. Organized by definition is “orderly and efficient” (organized or organised, 2000). You have to have to find some kind of order and a plan for you to complete the tasks or goals you set for yourself. I know I need to be more organized in managing my priorities and my time because I will attempt to do several task at once simultaneously instead of making a list and prioritizing from greatest to least important. I need to manage my time by not letting it lapse over from project to project and falling behind. Instead I should set a specific time block for each task and stick to the time allotted for that task.

I can also capitalize on my past life experience as a Soldier and use the what the military has taught me, we all know the military has strict rules you must abide by to maintain order within its ranks. The funny thing about it though is that the military uses a lot of on the job training to get a lot of its tasks done. Even though you train in a certain military occupational specialty often you find yourself in a role in which you are very unfamiliar. You adapt and overcome from that with you initial Soldier training and values you were taught during Basic Combat Training. Since school will be a role that I have not been familiar with since 2009, I can reach back and apply some of the organization skills I used in the military that made my career a success.
