Linux for the desktop
The Desktop Linux it is also called Linux on the desktop refers to certain Linux distributions with some features designed for the desktop personal computer. Some of these features include a graphic user interface (GUI) and various personal use applications. Various Linux distributions have been targeting the desktop role specifically, while others include all the software available for the platform. With that in mind the user will be given the choice to select either a "desktop" or "server" type when they are installing the operating system.
The OS
Open source is one of the greatest features of Linux, and will be as Linux tries to take hold on the personal desktop, with early user solving problems as they are encounter and making the changes and sending back changes so all users can benefit by them.
I do not believe that there will be some killer app that will help propel Linux desktop usage for the personal desktop. For one thing, various innovative applications, especially open source ones, tend to be based on network-oriented and can be easily ported to various different operating systems. Instead, I believe that a number of factors and trends will help lead to more broad-based usage of Linux as a client user environment. It remains to be seen what the relative strength of these factors will be, and how powerful their impact may be.
