What has been the status of women in the United States throughout history?

Women were always known to stay at home and raise their children while keeping a running household. It has taken about 128 years since the House of Representatives brought in its first woman aboard (Rainbo, 2006). It was not until 1869, that women were even allowed to cast their votes. In the 1840’s, women joined together to create feminism so they could attempt to live their lives as an equal to men. The serious studies of women written by amateur women scholars were ignored by the male-dominated history profession until the 1960s, when the first breakthroughs came. The field of women's history exploded dramatically after 1970, along with the growth of the new social history and the acceptance of women into graduate programs of the history department.

What is the status of women in the U.S. today?

Women in the U.S. have made big advances in every field of the job force, yet discrimination still exists. Women have gradually become leaders in the professions of medicine, law, and business. They also have taken jobs once regarded as too physically strenuous. Women have become sanitation workers, police officers, fire fighters, and can fight in wars. Today, women can vote, run for office and pretty much get any job they wish to obtain. Women still have groups and movements in place to ensure that this struggle ends up with complete equality between men and woman. Women today are still the largest victims of sexual harassment and violent abuse over any other minority (Rainbo, 2006).
