Organizational Behavior – Types of Leadership

With leadership comes great responsibility, as the people you manage look to you for guidance and the ability to know how to take their company to financial success. For a lot of companies, a CEO that is failing in leadership could take their company to ruin, such as a loss in stock price, high layoffs, and debt from taking on too many projects.

Certain types of leaderships work well in different companies, while other styles do not mesh with the company’s goal, which would lead to many talented workers find sunnier skies somewhere else. However, with the right CEO at the helm, the company can thrive and become a brand name that people want to have.

In our given scenario, Executive A became CEO of his corporation several years ago when the stock price was in free-fall to $23 a share, and the company losing two million dollars a year. After Executive A’s tenure, the stock price of the corporation is now up 128% and posted a profit during the second quarter of his first year as CEO. Despite being hailed as the corporation’s success, Executive A gives credit of the company’s turnaround to the strong leaders he developed in the organization, and takes the mistakes and poor results for himself.

Executive A will be retiring in the next two years and will need to pick a successor, which he has narrowed down to Leader B and Leader C. Each leader has their own style and way of motivating their subordinates. I will look at each Executive and Leader with their types of leadership and how they would affect the corporations and employees’ performances.

Executive A is a “level 5” leader. According to the Harvard Business Review, a level 5 leader is someone who can “blend the paradoxical combination of deep personal humility with intense professional will” (Collins, 2005, p. 1).
