The nature of the organization that I have chosen to use as the basis of my paper and general approach is the United States Navy. I have been active duty Navy for the past 10 years, and many people believe the Navy and military, as a whole does not function like a company or top organization. In reality, the Navy is not any different then your average company. We go though extensive human resources training on a variety of topics such as sexual harassment, alcohol awareness, summer and winter safety, and emergency preparedness for you and your family in the event of a natural disaster. We also constantly train for real world situations regarding our job as sailors.

The Navy starts at the recruiting level. This is the first part to a long journey into becoming a sailor in today’s Navy. I will be discussing the role the Navy recruiter plays into the recruitment of young motivated individuals. The Navy evaluation system, or performance appraisal system is an aspect of our job that plays a vital role in the advancement up the ranks. Along with the evaluation system, we have the promotional exams that take place twice a year and evaluations are 40 percent of that exam. I will be discussing the pay and special pays we receive as active duty sailors along with the many other benefits we receive along with our families.

Finally, leadership roles are a key concept into the everyday success of the Navy. Each individual has a very different way of being a leader and applying those leadership skills. This is why in the Navy we go through leadership and supervisory courses every few months and especially when we pick up the next rank. This is a way to not only brush up on our skills but to teach every member how to handle situations and correct deficiencies within the workforce as a successful leader.
