TITLE: Impact of Globalization on Culture: A Sociological Study in Dhaka

Abstract:

The effects of globalization are to be discussed in detail in the paper and how Bangladesh is coping up with it. The topic is divided in segments for better understanding and discussions in details. The positive and negative sides are both equally weighted. People of different age and occupation from the capital city DHAKA are interviewed on their penchant for traditional or foreign culture. It shows different attitudes regarding preference in different cultural aspects like norms, beliefs, food, entertainment and clothing.

1. Introduction:

Over the last two decades radical transformation have been taking place in the social and cultural aspect of Bangladesh. Through the process of globalization people’s outlook on different elements of culture has changed dramatically.

According to Martin Albrow and Elizabeth King [ED] (1990), globalization is a process to bring all the human beings of the world in a comprehensive community. The process involves various types of efforts. There are, thus, various types of globalization, such as economic globalization, political globalization, cultural globalization, etc., although they are all interconnected and interrelated. However, it is cultural globalization that is our main field of interest here.

It has been seen how globalization changed the traditional pattern of culture and mixed it up with foreign culture. These attitudes concerning these different cultural overviews stand for the strong impact of globalization on the culture of Bangladesh. In this paper, different group of people was interviewed regarding their choice on different elements of culture. Each group’s way of making sense of the topic, as well as the attitudes they express and the arguments they use in the discussion, can be explored.
