I do consider myself information literate, but I would have to contribute my growth of literacy to my years in general education and college. I don’t think that one can grow in literacy unless they are being deliberate about growing their knowledge base. I know in my career of choice as a surgical technician that I will have to continue my education to keep my degree. Not only do I think that this is important for my career but I think it will be beneficial for me as an individual. I have also come to learn that it is important to be weary of certain resources. It is important to discern between reputable information and information that could be fraudulent or dishonest. This is important because information leads to communication and communication leads to trust. People need to trust that you are telling them the truth. I’ve learned that it is important to ask the whys and what ifs. Evaluation and analyzing information against other information is an important step in finding truth. For myself to improve in information literacy I will need to continue to push myself to grow in all areas of life. To be open to diversity and to be willing to listen even if I don’t agree with what I’m learning. However, for the general hope of society’s information literacy I feel that each individual has to take responsibility in its growth. It is important for everyone to contribute by being careful in the information they pass along to others. To only spread what has been well researched and has been found to be true.
