REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter tackles about the researchers chosen topic which is “Materials used in constructing the newly built dormitory in Cavite State University”. The materials used in constructing are stated below. The researchers selected the basic materials used in construction management.

Cement

Minerals Education Coalition (2013), in manufacturing cement, it should have an abundant supply of limestone or similar rocks. In United States, about two-thirds of the states are manufacturing cement. Every states produces a big amount of cement each year which is about 90 million tons. There are six largest manufacturing states, California, Texas, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Missouri, and Alabama. These states account 50%of the annual U.S. cement production. The 20% of the cement consumed is imported by other countries, Canada, Thailand, and China which are the major suppliers.

The manufactured cement is divided into two. The 75% is used to make ready mix concrete. It is used for making building, bridges, sidewalks, walls, and other constructed structures. The other 25% is used to make building materials like concrete blocks, pipes, and pre-cast slabs for road building and repairs, and other uses.

If cement is not available there are other materials that can be a substitute. The substitute depends on the structure being constructed and what physical properties it should have. These substitutes are wood, glass, steel, aluminum, fiberglass, stone, clay brick, and asphalt.

In United States, there is other substitute for concrete called pozzolans. These materials are hardened when mixed with lime. It composes of volcanic rock and other by-products like fly ash and blast furnace slag.
