An employee’s morale can greatly impact their productivity and wellbeing of an organization. If an employee feels appreciated they are more likely to work harder and in turn be better employees. With recent economic difficulties, many companies have had to reduce personnel and find ways to be more efficient. These reductions not only affect those that are laid off, but also those left behind. At times employees that remain in the organization have to take on more responsibilities.

Our organization has selected job satisfaction as a priority, and has created a survey to explore what an employee would like to be recognized for and what methods of recognition are preferred.

Participation on the survey is essential to understand how the employees are feeling, and much thought was put into the questions asked. The questions were formulated such as the employee could easily answer them based on their own feelings and on common knowledge. The survey begins by exploring the issues on a team basis and quickly moves to a more personal “you” approach. The intent of starting in this manner was to make the individual comfortable and not feel threatened by what could be perceived as a personal question. While the personal feelings of the employee is what the survey is seeking, the organization felt it was important to first make the employee feel comfortable, and ease into the more in depth questions.

The order of the questions was also taken into account. First the morale and the recognition of the overall team was addressed. Next the current recognition programs were discussed. The following questions were about the employees’ thoughts on what they would prefer if a new program was created, and how much control over that program they would like to own.
