Cell cycle I

1. Open your early notes on DNA structure (in the “molecules” lecture) and sketch a DNA molecule. Show

each strand, identify the 3’ and 5’ carbon atoms on the ribose sugar, and show the role of the

phosphate group in linking nucleotides together. Do not worry about the structure of individual

nucleotides. This is a review of material we’ve covered that is important to understand for April’s

lectures.

2. Based on the DNA/chromosome diagram I discussed during today’s lecture, sketch a representation of a

single chromosome during G1 phase of Interphase. Be certain to identify the 3’ and 5’ ends of the DNA

strands.

3. Based on the DNA/chromosome diagram I discussed during today’s lecture, sketch a representation of

the above chromosome during prophase. Be certain to identify the 3’ and 5’ ends of the DNA strands.

4. On the chromosome you sketched above (question 3), identify

the centromere

the kinetochore

each sister chromatid

5. What is the difference between the genetic information (DNA) in two sister chromatids and a

chromosome?

* Nothing

6. With what cellular structures are histones found?

* DNA molecules are wrapped around them

7. Where, in a cell, are microtubules and actin filaments found during cell division?

* They’re on the cytoplasmic side of the cleavage furrow. The plus end is connected to the Kinetichore and the minus end is attached to the centrosome

8. What proteins comprise microtubules and actin filaments?

* Tubulin and actin respectively.

9. With what structures are the plus ends of microtubules associated during metaphase of mitosis?

* They’re associated with kinesin, and attach to the kineticore.

10. With what structures are the minus ends of microtubules associated during metaphase of mitosis?

* Theyre associated with dynesins, and attach to the centrosome.

11. Consider a diploid cell that contains 6 chromosomes.

a. Sketch the appearance of each of the chromosomes when the...
