According to the article, the approach to the business research is about using qualitative methodologies in nursing research. The purpose of is to “provide an overview of the complexity of sampling in qualitative research, and provoke reflection and consideration of qualities methodologies” (Higginbottom, 2004, p.7). In other words the purpose of this research is for health based and nursing research. The article then goes into the different types of qualitative methodologies, such as grounded theory, phenomenology, and ethnography.

The issue at hand that the author is trying to convey to its readers is to give this type of qualitative research a chance to be used with nurse researchers. The issue that the researchers are having with this type of research is the fact that there has been criticism over the “lack of transparency in procedures and processes” (Higginbottom, 2004, p.7). When doing critical research making sure the sampling techniques are strong in the procedures and process. Making sure these are correct sampling is critical to ones research and must be sound and correct.

The data collection methods used by nurse researchers in qualitative research “is determined by the methodology selected and the topic under investigation” (Higginbottom, 2004, p.8). In ethnographic research, the sample group is comprised up of members of the community that is being investigated. On the other hand there is theoretical sampling, which “demands concurrent data collection and analysis, so that more individuals who display the characteristics that warrant further investigations can be recruited to the study as the research progresses and preliminary findings emerge” Higginbottom, 2004, p. 9). Qualitative Research typically uses non-probability sampling techniques. Non-probability is not to be used for a general population but only for a specific population.
